Nutrition in Humans

  • There are 5 steps involved in nutrition in animals including human beings.
  • Ingestion: The process of taking in food by an organism is called ingestion.
  • Digestion: Digestion is the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into simple soluble substances.
  • Absorption: The digested food is then taken up by the circulatory stream and carried to the cells of the body. This process is called absorption.
  • Assimilation: The absorbed food is used by the body to generate energy and for growth.
  • Egestion: The undigested food is a waste product, and it is removed from the body in the last stage by a process called egestion

Human Digestive system

  • We take food through our mouth, digest and utilise it.
  • Figure given below shows the human digestive system

  • Human digestive system consists of alimentary canal and its associated human digestive system glands.
  • Various organs of human digestive system in sequence are
    1. Mouth (Buccal Cavity)
    2. Oesophagus (food Pipe)
    3. Stomach
    4. Small intestine
    5. Large intestine
    6. Rectum
    7. Anus.
  • The glands which are associated with human digestive system are
    1. Salivary glands- Located in mouth or Buccal Cavity
    2. Liver- It is the largest gland situated in the upper part of abdomen on the right side.
    3. Pancreas- located just below the stomach
    The ducts of various glands open into the alimentary canal and pour secretion of their juices into the alimentary canal.
  • Digestion in the mouth
  • We take food through our mouth and the process of taking food into the body is called ingestion.
  • The mouth or buccal cavity contains teeth, tongue and salivary glands.
  • Digestion begins in the mouth when we chew the food with the help of our teeth.
  • The teeth cut the food into smaller pieces, chew and grind it.
  • Chewing breaks down the food into smaller pieces and mixes them with saliva. This process is called mastication.
  • The salivary glands secrete watery liquid called saliva. Saliva is a digestive juice that helps to partially digest the starch present in the food.
  • The tongue helps in mixing saliva with the food.
  • Tongue is a muscular organ that helps you eat the food. It mixes saliva with the food during chewing and helps in swallowing it.
  • We also taste food with our tongue as it has taste buds that detect different tastes of food.

Structure of a Tooth

Each tooth consists of the following parts:

• Crown - The part of the tooth that is visible above the

gums.

• Root - The unseen portion that supports and holds

the tooth in place.

• Pulp – The soft core richly supplied with blood vessels

and nerves.

A tooth is made up of a bone-like hard structure called dentine. The dentine is covered with

a hard, shiny covering known as the enamel. Enamel is the hardest substance in our body.

Types of Teeth

The teeth on one side of the jaw are a mirror

image of those located on the opposite side.

There are four types of teeth in adult humans:

• Incisors: There are eight incisors; four at

the top-center of our mouth and four at

the bottom-center. They are flat, with a

chisel-like sharp edge and help to bite and

cut food into small chewable pieces.

• Canines: There are four canines one on each side of the incisors. They are sharp, pointed

and help in tearing the food.

• Premolars: There are eight premolars; two on either side of the canines in each jaw. They

help crush, grind food and move it from the front teeth to the molars for chewing.

• Molars: There are 12 molars, next to the premolars in the upper and lower jaw. They are

broad, flat, strong and chew food into small, easily consumable

Topic Nutrition in Animals

Chemical digestion in the mouth and buccal cavity

The breakdown of food into simpler nutrients by the action of enzymes is known as chemical

digestion. Chemical digestion in the mouth takes place due to the action of the enzymes

secreted by the salivary glands. 

Salivary glands

The salivary glands secrete saliva in the mouth. An enzyme amylase present in the saliva

breaks down the starch present in food into simpler forms. Enzymes are biological catalysts

that speed up chemical reactions in the body. The mucus present in saliva makes food slimy

and slippery so that it can be easily swallowed

Tongue

The tongue is a muscular organ found at the base of the mouth. It is one of the strongest

muscles in our body. The tongue has specialised cells called taste buds which help us to

taste food. The tongue moves the food around the mouth and directs the particles that needs   

Pharynx

The mouth and the nose open into the pharynx. The pharynx is a cone-shaped passagewayor both food and air.

Stomach

It serves as a muscular bag which is situated towards the left side of the abdominal cavity, beneath the diaphragm. This vital organ acts as a storage for the food and provides enough time to digest meals. The stomach also produces digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid that maintains the process of digestion.


Mucous: It is an aqueous secretion produced by the mucous membranes. It functions by protecting the stomach lining and gastric pits from the acid, which is produced by the glands to destroy the bacteria that entered along with the food particles.


Digestive enzymes: They are the group of enzymes which functions by breaking down polymeric macromolecules like biopolymers into their smaller and simpler substances.


Hydrochloric acid: It is the digestive fluid formed by the stomach during the process of digestion. It functions by destroying harmful microorganisms present in the food particles.


Small Intestine

The small intestine is a thin, long tube of about 10 feet long and a part of the lower gastrointestinal tract. It is present just behind the stomach and acquires a maximum area of the abdominal cavity. The complete small intestine is coiled and the inner surface consists of folds and ridges.


Large Intestine

This is a thick, long tube measuring around 5 feet in length. It is present just beneath the stomach and wraps over the superior and lateral edges of the small intestine. It absorbs water and consists of bacteria (symbiotic) that support the breakdown of wastes to fetch small nutrients

Human Digestive System Notes

The human digestive system breaks down food to release energy essential for the body to carry out its activities.

The process of digestion takes place in 6 major steps.

The food is ingested by the alimentary canal and is propelled through the body for further processing.

The autonomous nervous system controls the peristalsis, contraction and relaxation of muscles within the alimentary canal wall.

The food is passed to the small intestine where it is digested, and the nutrients are absorbed.

Water, electrolytes and vitamins are absorbed by the large intestine and the waste is defecated.
