Answers

1. The children were to be driven to the sands at Jagborough for a treat.

2. Nicholas refused to eat his breakfast because there was a frog in it

3. Nicholas was not allowed to go with the other children for a treat because he himself put a frog in his breakfast and refused to eat it.

 4. Nicholas was not allowed to go into the gooseberry garden because he was in disgrace.

5. Nicholas went to the gooseberry garden to make his aunt believe that he had been to the gooseberry garden, thus to keep her busy by keeping a watch over the garden.

6. The key was important as it kept the mysteries of the lumber room secure from unauthorised intrusion.

 7. Nicholas saw a tapestry picture, quaint twisted candlesticks, a teapot fashioned like a china duck, a carved sandalwood box and a large square book with plain black covers in the lumber room.

8. The aunt was calling out to Nicholas as she had slipped into the rain-water tank and needed a ladder to get out of it.

9. Nicholas gave the following reasons to avoid rescuing the aunt:

i. He was not allowed to go the gooseberry garden.  

ii. The voice of the lady seeking for help did not sound like that of his aunt’s.

iii. When he asked if there would be strawberry jam for tea, the lady confirmed. However, the previous day his aunt had said there wasn’t any.

10. The kitchen maid eventually rescued Nicholas’ aunt.

 11. The evening tea was partaken of in a fearsome silence because the aunt had suffered undignified and unmerited detention in a rain-water tank for thirty-five minutes.

Answers

1. The vagabond asks for the sky above, a bed in the bush, bread for food and river water to drink.

 2. He wants his bed in the bush so that he can see the stars.

3. The poet wants a life which is carefree and wandering. He wants to sleep on the grass and watch the open sky above it. He wants to eat only bread and drink water from the river.

4. The vagabond does not wish for wealth, hope, love and friends.

5. The only thing that the vagabond needs is freedom.

6. The lines in the poem which show us that the vagabond wants to completely avoid all human association are: Nor a friend to know me; All I seek, the heaven above And the road below me.

7. The poet speaks of the harsh conditions in autumn and winter but says that it will not deter him in his yearning to be on the road.

8. In the poem, autumn signifies the beginning of old age.

9. The frosty field is as white as a meal.

10. The vagabond evokes images of clear skies, starry nights, dipping bread in the river, a long unending road, autumn leaves falling, vast open fields covered with leaves in autumn and snow in winter and the fireside in some lonesome hut.

11. In these lines, the poet expresses his earnest desire to lead a carefree life, untroubled and a happy–go–lucky life. He doesn’t want material comforts. He only wants to live out in the open, in the company of nature.
